8.EE.3 Use numbers expressed in the form of a single digit times an integer power of 10 to estimate very large or very small quantities, and to express how many times as much one is than the other. For example, estimate the population of the United States as 3 times 108 and the population of the world as 7 times 109, and determine that the world population is more than 20 times larger.
8.EE.4 Perform operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation, including problems where both decimal and scientific notation are used. Use scientific notation and choose units of appropriate size for measurements of very large or very small quantities (e.g., use millimeters per year for seafloor spreading).
Answer the following questions in at least five sentences.
1) Rewrite the standard in your own words. How does this assignment relate to the standard?
The standard is 8.EE.3. Where we had to use Scientific notation using the population of the country we had chosen to one day visit. We also had to use integers and the difference between the population of our country which in this case is Germany, with the United States. This relates to the standard because we had to use scientific notation and integers to find the difference and total between Germany and United States. Basically, we had to compare both the United States and the chosen country.
2) What are the steps you took to complete and do well on this assignment?
The steps I took to complete and do well on this assignment is I first did research on my country, Germany, and the United States. Afterwards, I got the poster paper from the front of Ms.Diaz's class. Then, I wrote down the title, and the name of my country and the United States.(Germany) After that, I wrote down the different categories and I wrote down the calculations. Finally, I decorated with color and markers.
3) This assignment demonstrates the following strengths...
This assignment demonstrates that I can calculate the scientific notation of different countries and things. It also shows that I can calculate the differences and the different integers because I had to compare the populations of the country I wanted to visit (Germany) and the United States. Another strength it shows is the ability to do work in a short time, and having creativity. I did it in a very short time IN class which shows that I have good time management and I can work very fast. Finally, this assignment allowed me to show the neatness and effort.
4) I could have improved my work on this assignment by...
I could have improved on this assignment in many ways. For one thing, I could've done the assignment at home in order to do the project better and not procrastinate. I also could've added more color instead of adding light color pencil colors when markers were a better choice. I could've bought markers to make the project more colorful and alive. Another way, is getting a yellow paper instead of pink to make it pop out more and catch more attention. Finally, I could have used printed pictures instead of plain words so that it would look more professional and neat.
How will you apply the skills you learned when you are an adult or in other classes while you are still a student?
I will apply the skills I learned in the future, because I'm sure I'll have to know how to convert numbers to Scientific Notation. Like if I want to become a math teacher. I'll have to know these skills and teach my students. As well as and architect which I'd probably want to be. Because I'll calculate the dimensions by Scientific Notation. This will help me greatly. I can use scientific notation in the future to make big numbers easier to calculate.
