3-D Atomic Structure Model
3a. I know the structure of the atom is composed of protons, neutrons, and electrons.
3b. I know that compounds are formed by combining two or more different elements and that compounds have properties that are different from their constituent elements.
1. Justify how this project/activity/assignment meets the standard, using evidence from the standard itself to demonstrate your mastery and/or understanding.
The activity meets the standard because I had to know the structure of an atom to make this model. I also had to know that atoms are composed of protons, neutrons, and electrons. In completing the the 3D atom model, I was able to demonstrate my understanding of the structure of an atom because I determined the atomic number, the atomic mass, and the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons that my element had. I was able to make this model by knowing the information needed from the element card I was given.
2. Elaborate on at least 1 Science & Engineering Practices you feel you met/gained from completing this project. The Science & Engineering Practices (SEP) identified are listed below:
1. Asking questions and defining problems
5. Using mathematics and computational thinking
2. Developing and using models
6. Constructing explanations & designing solutions
3. Planning and carrying out investigations
7. Engaging in argument from evidence
4. Analyzing and interpreting data
8. Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating info
The one SEP that I think I met from completing this project Is Developing and Using models. I made a model using all the information that I was given about a certain element. Then, I extracted the information and started on my project. First, I saw the number of protons. I then found the number of neutrons and electrons and calculated the atomic mass. After that, I gathered all the materials needed and made a model of my element.
3. Reflect on your experience, work, and/or score. What is ONE SEP you could have done better on? How will improving in this SEP benefit future work/projects? List “next steps” for improving this SEP.
The one step I could've done better on was 3. Planning and carrying out investigations I we didn't really plan out what the model was gonna look like and how the structure was going to look like and how it would hold up. We also could have planned it better and get more materials so that the building could work out more efficiently and look better as a whole.
4. How will you presently apply the content and skills you learned from this assignment in the real-world, outside of the classroom? Make connections between the content and your life Example: what causes our weather, healing, measuring speed/velocity on a roller coaster, etc.
I will apply the skills I learned from this assignment to the real world in the future as an adult if I want to be a teacher or a professor who teaches science.I could teach them about cells and how how elements are structured based on their atomic mass and the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons they have. Also,I can apply these skill for when I have kids who i will probably need to teach this topic to.
