ROSA PARKS
My civil rights activist is Rosa Parks, who refused to surrender her bus seat to a white passenger, which led to the Montgomery boycott and other efforts to end segregation. Rosa Parks was born in Tuskegee, Alabama on February 4, 1913 and died on October 24, 2005 in the age of 92 in Detroit, Michigan. Her mother, Leona, was a teacher and her father, James McCauley was a carpenter. Her parents separated while she was still young. Rosa went to the Highlander folk school and the Alabama State Teachers School for Negroes. Rosa had to give up on her education to care for her sick mother. Later on, Rosa met Raymond Parks, who she married. With the help of Raymond, Rosa graduated High School. Unfortunately, her mom, dad, and her husband all died of cancer.
Rosa Parks was an advocate because she wanted to change the way how black people were looked at. Rosa parks wanted to change the fact that the white people thought that there was a line between blacks and whites. Rosa Parks did something about this unjust situation. Rosa was on a bus one day, and she decided to sit in the front where the white people were supposed to be seated. Back then, it was not right for a white person to stand while a black person sat. When all the seats were filled, the blacks were asked to stand and go to the back. Rosa refused to do so, so that is why she got arrested. However, the movement was not over. Because of Rosa Parks, movement, Martin Luther king and all the other black residents formed a boycott. The boycott went on and finally, the Supreme Court gave in. It was a success for all black people including Rosa Parks!
I can apply this to my life by taking a stand and doing the right thing. I could protest by simply writing a strong, precise letter explaining which will make the people change the way they act. I could also apply this to my life by doing the opposite of what the person want me to do just like Rosa Parks so that the other person can realize why I am standing up for the cause so that I can have more supporters to help me fight for what is right. This will help because the person will stop and listen so that I can be able to incourage what is right. There are so many ways you could do to be an advocate for change. You just have to know how to be an advocate and when to be an advocate.
