culminating assignment
In this assignment, you will be paralleling one of the novels that we have read this year to a current day societal issue. You will write a three paragraph essay connecting a novel that we have read in class to an article, and your own life.
I will provide three different articles that you can use for your written piece. You may also find a different article of your choice with teacher approval. You must type up your response and print it out and put it on your digital portfolio by June 1. All students MUST present in class and this is what I will be signing off for your ELA portion of the digital portfolio checklist for SLCs.
What book are you going to be discussing in your writing? Stargirl
Breaking Through
Stargirl
The Bronze Bow
Summarize the main points of the article in one paragraph (4-5 sentences). Cite textual evidence to support your answer.
This article was about the "No One Eats Alone" campaign. It was made by the mother of Lili Smith who was sadly socially isolated because of her appearance. Her mother wanted to make this campaign because she did not want any other child to experience what Lili felt. Middle school was a pain for her because of this. The main point of the article is to show that some kids may feel invisible when sitting alone. In the article, it says, "Low-self esteem, or maybe too much self-esteem. It can all collide in the cafeteria and leave some kids feeling invisible if they don’t fit in at any one particular table.”
Compare how the article and the novel address the societal issue in one paragraph (4-5 sentences). Cite textual evidence to support your answer.
Both Stargirl and the article share the same societal issue. Both involve a form of isolation and bullying. In the "No One Sits Alone" campaign, it says, "Ugh, middle school. There’s awkwardness, cliques and bullying." In Stargirl, the main character, Stargirl, goes through the same phase of trying to fit in at one point. No one really understood Stargirl and her unique personality. I can prove this because in the book, it says, "We wanted to define her, to wrap her up as we did each other, but we could not seem to get past "weird" and "strange" and "goofy." Her ways knocked us off balance. ” this proves that both articles share the same issue and that no one can understand Stargirl's quirky and wonderful personality.
How does this issue relate to your own life (4-5 sentences)?
This assignments relates to my life in my forth and fifth grade years in elementary school. You see, all through third grade, I had very high grades and a lot of friends. These girls decided to ruin my years because they didn't want me to be happy because they have always been rejected which was really sad. I still had friend throughout my whole elementary school years but forth and fifth grade was different because those "friends" decided to make sure everyone turned on me. One day, in forth grade, Mr. Neauman, my forth grade teacher, bought his niece all the way from Hong Kong. I talked to her about those girls and she promised that she would protect me no she did. From that day, those girls blackmailed me and threatened me because of my new friend. I decided to sit alone where the benched kids were. I sat alone and it was painful but better than getting pushed around by fake friends. I know how Lili felt and I feel like she deserved way way better because I'm sure she was sweet in the inside. When I see someone that sits alone, I will sit next to them.
